Yellow Room

Schumann after Kraus: Goethe with Silhouette
Goethe's mother made a collection in her reception room of all the keepsakes she received after 1775 from Weimar. In the centre is the portrait of the young Goethe with a silhouette, by Johann Ehrenfried Schumann after Georg Melchior Kraus. The portrait of Duchess Anna Amalia of Saxe-Weimar adorning the opposite wall was presented by her in 1778 after a visit to Frau Goethe in Frankfurt. The silhouettes on either side of the console clock are of the Duchess and her son Carl August. Goethe's bust by Martin Gottlieb Klauer recalls his portrayal of Orestes in the first performance of "Iphigenia".
