Note by Goethe with his date of birth
According to legend this is where Goethe came into the world. His christening is recorded on 29th August 1749 in the "Franckfurter Frag- und Anzeigungs-Nachrichten" (next to the window); underneath is Goethe's own note of his date of birth. His portrait by Julie von Egloffstein shows him in old age, as he recalls his Frankfurt days in "Poetry and Truth". The star and lyre, symbol of the poet, form the circle of life and death; they come from the decoration at Goethe's lying-in-state in Weimar in March 1832.
