A cook and two maids worked here under the supervision of Goethe's mother. The kitchen's special feature is the original water pump, which is connected to a well in the cellar. As a rule, water would be drawn from one of the numerous public wells. Food would be cooked at the stove on a hotplate over embers or an open fire. When people went out after dark in Frankfurt they would use lanterns like the one on the kitchen cupboard.
